E-bike Safety: What You Need to Know Before You Ride

Quick facts


- All electric assisted bicycles (e-bikes) must:

             -Not exceed 750 watts.

                         - A 750w fat tire e-bike can travel at speeds up to 20 mph.

            -Have fully operable pedals on permanently affixed cranks.

            - Be fully operable as a bicycle without the use of the electric motor.

- Class 1 e-bikes provide assistance only when the rider is pedaling, and does not provide assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 20 mph.

- Class 2 e-bikes are not capable of providing assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 20 mph.

- Class 3 e-bikes provide assistance only when the rider is pedaling; ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 28 miles per hour; and is equipped with a speedometer.

- Anyone under 16 years old may not operate a class 3 electric assisted bicycle.

- Anyone under 14 years old may not operate an electric assisted bicycle unless the individual is under the direct supervision of the individual's parent or guardian.

- Anyone under eight years old may not operate an electric assisted bicycle.

- E-bikes are subject to the same provisions and regulations as bicycles.

- Carrying more people than design permits is prohibited.

- Bike helmets should always be worn but are legally required for all class 3 E-bikes.

Highland City encourages residents to prioritize safety when using e-bikes. Please familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations, and educate others, including children, on their importance.
